GERD Awareness Week
What is GERD?
GERD is a chronic condition where stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, leading to symptoms such as heartburn, regurgitation, chest discomfort, and sometimes extra-esophageal manifestations like chronic cough, laryngitis, or asthma-like symptoms. While occasional reflux is common, persistent symptoms occurring two or more times per week may indicate GERD.
Why Awareness Matters
Despite its prevalence, GERD is often misunderstood or minimized by patients. Many self-treat with over-the-counter remedies without seeking medical advice, which can delay diagnosis and allow complications to develop. Untreated GERD can lead to esophagitis, strictures, Barrett’s esophagus, and even esophageal adenocarcinoma.
If you have those symptoms, book an appointment.
